Complete Decongestive Therapy

What Is Lymphedema?

How to Manage Lymphedema

Lymphedema is a chronic disorder that results from the accumulation of protein-rich fluid in body tissues when lymphatic fluid is unable to circulate properly. If untreated, body parts become swollen and painful. Swelling may appear after simple accidents, which suddenly overload the system. Injury, scarring, infection, and cancer treatment
involving lymph node removal and/or radiation therapy often cause symptoms.

Why Treat Lymphedema?

Lymphedema causes discomfort, decreased mobility, a need for frequent medical attention. Swelling and tightness gradually worsens over time and, without intervention, increased heaviness and decreased range of motion of the affected limb can occur. Patients are frequently hospitalized due to infection associated with lymphedema. Complete Decongestive Therapy can reduce swelling, improve wound healing and prevent life-threatening infection.

While lymphedema is presently an incurable, but manageable lifetime disease, edema is a symptom.
Edema resulting from lymphedema, and many other insults to the body, can be treated. Manual Lymphatic Drainage is one component of Complete Decongestive Therapy that is beneficial for treating edema.
After a comprehensive evaluation, treatment is comprised of Complete Decongestive Therapy, which includes:

• Manual Lymph Drainage
• Multi-layered compression bandages
• Decongestive exercise
• Skin care
• Education
• Compression garments
• Home program

Controlling lymphedema requires a life-long commitment. Even after the conclusion of treatment, daily exercise and use of compression garments are vital to maintaining optimal results.

Lymphatic Drainage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage
Manual lymphatic drainage is a technique that uses gentle, rhythmic strokes that encourages lymphatic
flow to decrease edema. Used independent, or as part of Complete Decongestive Therapy, its benefits
are numerous, including:
• Post-traumatic and post-surgical swelling
• Oncology Treatments
• Chronic Sinusitis
• Chronic Venous Insufficiency
• Autoimmune disorders
• Neurological Disorders
• Chronic Migraines
• Fibrocystic Breast Disease

Neuromuscular Therapy

Neuromuscular therapy is a system of massage techniques that were developed in the 1930's by Dr. Stanley Lief in England. It uses a holistic approach towards healing, emphasizing and stimulating the body's natural ability to heal itself. Neuromuscular therapy also enhances the function of joints and muscles, and accelerates the overall healing process by facilitating the release of endorphins.

Active Isolated Stretching

Developed by Aaron Mattes, Active Isolated Stretching (AIS) is a dynamic system for improving your flexibility and overall well-being. As you probably already know, stretching your muscles not only reduces your chance of injury, but also strengthens your tendons and improves your circulation.

Energy Work

Energy work is based on the belief that everyone has a "life force", and that the body needs to sustain its balance for optimum health. Anytime you experience emotional or physical illness, it indicates that your life force has simply become unbalanced. I work directly with your energy field to restore balance and flow to your entire system. And once your energy field has been restored to full health, your body will follow.

Movement Education

Movement education uses a custom-tailored approach to improving your body awareness and movement skills. Combining problem-solving, guided-discovery, and exploratory methods, this practice inevitably leads to a stronger connection between the mind and body, creating a more natural and graceful experience of movement and interaction with other people.

Trigger Point Therapy

Trigger Point Therapy is a style of bodywork that focuses on stimulating and releasing "trigger points" in your body. Trigger points are tender areas of tension similar to acupressure points, except they occur in the belly of the muscle rather than along the energy pathways of the body. These "knots" are built up throughout a person's life due to physical, mental, and/or emotional stress. During a session, focused pressure is applied through a variety of techniques order to release your trigger points. This process can be quite painful at times, yet the effects are lasting and profoundly transformative.

CranioSacral (SM)

CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle yet powerful technique that is effective in releasing neck pain, back pain, and mental stress (among other things). It does this by optimizing the movement of cerebrospinal fluid through the spine and around the skull. Developed by physician William Sutherland, this therapy provides a very soothing and relaxing healing experience.
